I remember as a little girl, my father introduced a reward system to help me achieve good grades in my academics. He would give money if I was 1st – 3rd positions in his subjects of interest. This motivated me a lot and from the beginning of each term, I would get really serious with those subjects. I would think about how to improve on them all through the term and I always looked forward to my reward at the end of the term.
All through the bible, success is always contingent on obedience to God’s words. This is God’s own reward system to motivate us. Let us look at this popular bible verse.
Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success.”
I would define “good success” for better understanding. The dictionary meaning of Good is having suitable or desirable qualities, promoting health, welfare or happiness.
Success is prosperous progress, achievement or termination, prosperity, attainment of wealth, influence or acclaim.
Joshua 1:8 promises good success but it is dependent on active recitation, a respeaking of God’s words, deep consideration, reflection upon God’s words and commands and doing them.
There are so many of God’s commands in the bible with promises dependent on obedience to His words.
Let us look at the “good success” written command in Matt 28:19-20. I’ll break this down.
- Tell people about God.
- Teach and disciple those you have reached with the gospel so they can have a healthy walk with God.
- Those discipled can then disciple others.
According to verse 20, God will be with us all through this task and always. Also it is a written command of God and if obeyed according to Joshua 1:8, there is a promise of good success.
